Cultural fit – next level of recruiting
Author: Irina Ivan
Amazon.com often asks recruitment agencies to send over the candidates that other companies rejected. It is probably one of the most inventive practices related to recruitment and it should give HR professionals a lot to think about. The moment Amazon.com takes this move, most certainly it is not interested in attracting what others have thrown away, but it rather has the intuition of the flaws of today's recruitment process. ...

Author: Irina Ivan
With all the economic turmoil we are going through, we have all the attention headed to what is going on on the market we operate in, to the risks and the milestones our companies are exposed to, the opportunities that may arise and we usually loose sight of what is going on inside our company, with our team and people. Economical downturn is a time when companies need high performance more than ever and that's why a deep insight on how people are performing can be like a fresh air breathe. Equality and fairness in the workplace – simple add-ons or a must?
Author: Irina Ivan
In workplaces, like in any other area of our lives, success starts far beyond the letter of the law, being built on a deep knowledge of the unwritten rules and mechanisms. The fifth article of the Romanian Labor Code states that work relations are based on the principle of an equal treatment for all the employees and employers. But as any other labor norms, it focuses more on defining the direct discrimination cases (on criteria such as sexual orientation, age, nationality, religion, etc). The acts of exclusion, differentiation, restriction or favoritism based on other criteria than the classical ones go into the wide "indirect discrimination" category. Given the ambiguity provided by the legislation, one has to follow unwritten laws when he is assessing the fairness and equality in his workplace. ...

Generations shift - a new challenge for the local HR market
Author: Irina Ivan
Starting with 2008, the Romanian labor market entered an era of change determined by an infusion of a new kind of workforce. As of the last year, the first generations born after the '89 turning point are ready to enter the labor market. Barely visible until now, the phenomenon will grow deeper in the years to come. And its effects as well. The major change that the newcomers will bring on the labor market is tied to... ...

High performers and their low visibility
Author: Irina Ivan
Contrary to what is commonly believed, in the day-to-day life very few managers are "bad" in the literal sense of this word. Managers who fire people for no real reason, who scream, who harass their employees are exceptions. The reality is a lot softer and sharper than this. Most of our managers are easy-going people who unconsciously persist in doing small mistakes that eventually drive away the top talent. One of the most common mistakes of managers is making people feel invisible....

Is the leadership in your company in downturn alongside with the world economy? – Part II
Author: Irina Ivan
Power and influence, money and access to a wealthier life, charisma... are just a few of the reasons why we look up for our supervisors, managers, leaders and why, sometimes, we even envy them, wishing we were in their shoes. Next time this thought crosses your head, think about the tremendous pressure and stress a business leader is going through during this time of economical downturn. Some may argue that a leader is there to run the business not only in great times, but especially in times of crises. We all worry about our jobs and financial security. But unlike the ones placed on top-management positions, we do not have to......

Is the leadership in your company in downturn alongside with the world economy? – Part I
Author: Irina Ivan
In the conditions of the emerging economical crisis all attention that the HR function had gained during the last few years seems to vanish leaving space for expectation, a lot of confusion and uncertainty. Words like "motivation", "personnel development" are being less and less pronounced and replaced by those related to finances. Leaders or simple employees, we all have the tendency of freezing all our projects until things settle down. If a general stand-by state can be considered somehow normal for a period of crisis, we cannot help noticing around us overreactions or at least extreme measures. ...

The NOW Revolution: Making the idea of “People First” a 21st Century Success Story
Author: Yiannis Lagos
Throughout most of the 19th and 20th centuries, entrepreneurs owned land and equipment and secured investments to produce products which were then sold. The organizational structure was vertical. The vision of the company was a top-down vision. This was the industrial model of free enterprise. If the leader of the company died or leadership changed hands, the old vision usually died. Many times so did the company. ...

Milestones in the military background of HR
Author: Irina Ivan
When Henry Ford wondered why people bring their heads at work if all he really needed is their hands and feet, he expressed the core of the 19th century business mentality. Back then, the work itself and not the people behind it counted.  A turning in this way of thinking took place in 1920’s when psychologists and work experts in the US started the Human Relations movement, which viewed workers in terms of their psychology and fit with their companies. ...

Does the mess on your desk mess up your work?
Author: Irina Ivan
Each time we read a magazine and see a photo of a personality in his office we can notice that the surrounding area is tidy and all the stuff is very well organized. It is obvious that keeping cleanness is good for the image of the workspace's owner and of an organization, if it is a rooted practice. But is there something more about workspace neatness than just image? Is the tidiness of our workstation telling more about our skills, our way of working and our effectiveness?...
